Cargol Treu Vi Alemany i Corrio, Penedes, Spain 2021

£27.95

Although we like the faux naïf label depicting a Spanish nursery rhyme, it has raised a few eyebrows among Vin Cognito customers, but, as the lovestruck George Emerson says in 'A Room With A View':  "I don't care what I see outside. My vision is within! Here is where the birds sing! Here is where the sky is blue!"

We must be hopeless romantics too, because we have fallen head over heels for this bottle's inner being. It is one of the most exciting white wines on our list, bringing together the playful frivolity of an artisan wine with the serious and stylish precision of an ultra-premium white. Technically-speaking, it's a wild-yeast, old-vine, barrel-fermented Xarello from a high altitude, fossil-rich vineyard in Penedes, but the data can't express its identity, so try a bottle and revel in its mineral-inflected charms, its idiosyncratic notes of burnt apple, hay, chopped peaches and ground almonds, but beware, you will fall in love with it, you will write poetry for it and you will make it a mixed cassette tape (we're showing our age now). Cherish the time you spend in its company, because it is precious. We only have 30 bottles and once it's gone you will have nothing left but beautiful memories and some pretty embarrassing poems. 12.5% alc. Organic. Drink now-2026.

Press review (previous vintage):

JancisRobinson.com: I love the quirky, child-like, pastels sketch of the label with rainbow, cloud, sun, snail, wildflowers, rolling green hills and a grape leaf. I love the wine even more. It is extraordinarily viscous!! So much so that when I poured the first tasting, I did a double-take and wondered if it was going to be sweet (but it didn’t smell sweet). Pale golden colour, fermenting apple and hops flowers on the nose, and a (very pretty) kombucha tang. This is gloriously kooky. It slides into your mouth as if it’s arriving on a vintage-gold, old-silk cushion via a wonky helter-skelter. Slow-motion, not-quite-smooth spiral and then, plop, plumpf, it’s at your feet, grinning with the silly tongue-in-cheek fun of it. It’s tastes of burnished, apple-cider-soused quince. The sweet-aniseed-root notes of roast celeriac frame flickflacks of (more) kombucha tang, dried golden currants, dried yuzu peel, cooked guava and sweet-pickled turmeric root. I feel like Alice, just taken a tumble down that darn rabbit hole. A beautiful, glimmering, lambent wine. (TC). Drink now-2026.” 17.5 points
