Lake Chalice ‘Raptor’ Chardonnay, Marlborough, New Zealand 2021
It can be difficult telling people that you have just woken up from a 30-year coma, so why not soften the blow by simply telling them you find new world Chardonnays too oaky. It’s a much gentler shorthand for saying the same thing. Here’s a great example of a modern new world Chardonnay, made from fruit grown on Burgundian rootstocks, which is bristling with green citrus on the nose and a Burgundian accent of flinty minerals and shavings (no more than shavings!) of new French oak. The palate is brisk and racy, with lime, toasted hazelnuts, chalk dust and something fresh and sappy like sugar snap peas. Stick it in a line-up of good-quality Meursaults and it won’t need to break cover. A great example of how far new World Chardonnays have come in the last 30 years. 13% alc. Drink now-2026.
