Lukas van Loggerenberg ‘Trust Your Gut’ Chenin Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa 2019

£31.95

An exciting new Chenin Blanc from Lukas van Loggerenberg! The name, ‘Trust Your Gut’, refers to the inner belief that comes with experience, but what am I doing trying to explain it when Lukas says it so much better himself: “We all have this inner instinct telling us what to do and sometimes you really just have to trust your gut to tell you what the right move is. I sourced grapes from special vineyards to use in this blend, which I believe is a great example of a wine that is made up of components that come together to provide a wine that is greater than the sum of its individual parts.”

The label depicts various representations of that feeling (a sailor following his compass, a bee finding the hive) and the wine somehow feels made rather than manufactured. It combines the ripeness of sweet kernel fruits with the acidity of Amalfi lemons, those wonderful large yellow varieties that you can eat straight from the tree, as sweet as an orange yet bristling with citric prickle. 13% alc. Drink now-2026. Only 12 bottles available.

Press review:

Tim Atkin MW: “Blending grapes from two farms and three vineyards in the Swartland and Stellenbosch, this is a bready, leesy, worked style of Chenin Blanc with some grip from skin tannins, subtle oxygenation and a fresh, tangy, mineral-edged finish. 12.8% alc. Drink now-2024.” 91 points

The Wine Advocate: “Beginning pale lemon in the glass, the 2019 Trust Your Gut is made from Chenin Blanc. Delineated fruit aromas of sweet citrus, white peach, nectarine and mandarin orange, with elements of waxy melon and pineapple skin emanate from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine offers an impressive mouthfeel with an almost electric texture alongside lifting acidity and firm mineral tension. Flavours of dusty lemon, yellow peach, elements of petrichor and almond butter sway on the elongated finish. It's a delicious wine that shows terroir with a sense of place at a great price. Well done!” 90 points
