Albariño 'RPF', Pisano, Progreso, Uruguay 2025

£19.95

Look at us! Aren’t we quirky selling an Albariño from Uruguay! That’s so random! Or is it? If you look at a map of the world and flip Uruguay’s southern latitude into the northern hemisphere, then take a boat directly east, you’ll land in Galicia, home to a grape called,(surprise, surprise), Albariño! So, it makes perfect sense for this Atlantic variety to thrive in Uruguay too. Not so random after all!

This is so much better than Pisano’s regular bottling, but is only a couple of shekels more. It was aged in neutral barrels, which doesn’t impart any strong oaky flavour, but allows the fruit to mellow and distance itself from those ‘tinny’ Albariños, which linger on the palate for about as long as a gnat with a busy schedule. There is texture to this Albariño, a hint of apricot yoghurt and peaches and cream, but mainly clean, pure citrus refreshment. 13.5% alc. Aged in 500 litre neutral French oak. ‘RPF’ stands for ‘Reserva Personal de la Familia’. Drink now-2028

Press review:

JancisRobinson.com: “The oak impression is very subtle and doesn’t dominate the ripe Albariño fragrance of spicy golden plums and creamy citrus. Fills the mouth with fruit and freshness, plus an attractive texture from the lees and the barrel that adds presence and length as well as roundness on the finish. Fresh and pure, the oak very much in the back seat.” 17 points

Decanter: “Light oak and baking spices with cinnamon aromas. Fuzzy peach and white blossom flavours on a creamy, textured palate. Vibrant acidity and saline finish create a structured, inviting, multilayered Albariño.” 92 points
