“Really quite thrilling.” - Jancis Robinson MW

“Absolutely deserves the Premier Cru status, even if it comes from a single village and is a downgraded Grand Cru." - The Wine Advocate

This newly-labelled dry Riesling from Maximin Grünhaus is a real insider’s secret. The estate’s Grand Cru (Grosses Gewâchs) Rieslings sell for twice the price, which might intuitively seem fair, as this is a ‘mere’ Premier Cru (Erste Lage), but all the fruit comes from Grand Cru sites, it just happens to be a blend of two of them, the Herrenberg and Abstberg, so it can’t call itself a Grand Cru. You could even argue that it’s a better wine, if you are a fan of the greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts theory. It comes in at just 11.5% alc, but packs a lot of concentration into its featherweight frame, bristling with ripe lime and peach and a racy citrus energy that propels it forward and that wonderful sense of rain-on-slate that hallmarks the finest Mosel wines. 11.5% alc. Drink now-2040.

The Wine Advocate: “The 2023 Maximin Grünhaus Grünhäuser 1G is the second selection of the Grünhaus GGs Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg. The wine is pure, intense and flinty on the deep and finely intense nose. On the palate, this is a complex, energetic, vivacious and persistently structured Grünhäuser that deserves the Premier Cru status, even if it comes from a single village and is a downgraded Grand Cru. "We don't have anything else but 'grand cru' sites," says Maximin von Schubert, who created this wine by vat selection (fuder and stainless steel). Drink now-2065.” 93 points

Jancis Robinson MW: “Much better balanced for me than the Schloss bottling. Dry but not painfully so and chock-full of extract. Really quite thrilling. Drink now-2034.” 16.5+ points

Vinous (Anna Krebiehl MW): “The 2023 Riesling Grünhauser hails from Herrenberg and Abstberg. A slight smokiness clings to ripe, juicy pear and lemon. The palate offer wonderful equanimity, serene balance and slate-driven brightness on a fluid, smooth body that remains bright and fresh with vivid zestiness. Drink now-2044.” 91 points
