Sadie Family Wines 'Skerpioen', Swartland, South Africa 2024
Absolutely stunning! This is, and always has been, South Africa’s finest white wine, bar none, end of, period, no further discussion, don’t care what you say, I’m sticking my fingers in my ears. Bla bla bla bla. It tastes like a rockfall that has crashed through an electricity sub-station and smashed into the ocean. It’s a wine that bristles, buzzes and hums with energy, tasting of lime and grapefruit, sea spray, oyster shell, chipped flint, candied lemon peel and apple blossom. A blend of Chenin Blanc and Palomino from dazzling limestone soils. 13% alc. Drink now-2040.
Press review:
Tim Atkin MW: “Skerpioen comes from one of the Swartland's most unusual and beautiful sites, a 90-year-old vineyard on a combination of beach sand and bright-white limestone. Marrying equal parts Palomino and Chenin Blanc, the 2024 is slightly broader than usual, but retains its defining sea breeze freshness. Jasmine and wet stone lead you into a sappy, pure, very lightly wooded palate of saffron, waxed lemons and salted almonds. A stunning white that ages majestically too. Drink 2026-2038.” 99 points
