Sadie Family Wines 'Skerpioen', Swartland, South Arica 2025
Skerpioen 2025 crackles with so much electro-static charge that it’s freaking out conspiracy theorists. The limestone soil, on which these Chenin Blanc and Palomino vines grow, lends an almost photovoltaic charge to the wine itself, buzzing and humming with potential energy. It’s clean, crisp and salty with a lovey lick of dry oak, like a cross between a zappy white Burgundy and a zippy Loire Chenin Blanc. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2038
Press review:
Tim Atkin MW: “Anyone who has visited the vineyard - a combination of beach sand and limestone sitting next to the Atlantic - will know why this remarkable blend of equal parts Chenin Blanc and Palomino tastes the way it does. It’s like you’re tasting the essence of the place. Aged in three foudres, this has engaging sea breeze, kelp and honeysuckle aromas, layers of gunflint, salted almond and lemongrass and a chiselled, bone-dry finish. Drink now-2037.” 98 points
Vinous (Neal Martin): “The 2025 Skerpioen is Chenin Blanc and Palomino planted on aeolian sand on limestone, picked on the same days as they are complanté. It is tightly wound on the nose and unfurls almost reluctantly, with hints of orange blossom and wax resin, grilled walnut and a touch of sea spray. Fine delineation. The palate is beautifully balanced, quite tangy on the entry, with a silver thread of acidity and notes of lime, bitter lemon and orange rind on the prolonged finish. Just so more-ish. Drink 2028-2044.” 95 points
