Savennieres, Chateau de Plaisance, Loire, France 2022
Winemaker, Vanessa Cherruau, is on everybody’s lips at the moment, as should be a glass of this wine. It’s a stunning Savennières, the Loire’s most prestigious appellation for dry Chenin Blanc. It shows the crisp, lean, chiselled character you would expect from a northern French white, but it’s counterpoised by some succulent green melon, yellow plum and lemon sorbet notes, while the influence of the oak brings a little swagger and panache and gives it Burgundian undertones, yet it remains defiantly local in its mineral-driven, precise, crystal-clean palate. 13% alc. Aged in barrel for 15 months. Drink now-2034.
Certified organic and biodynamic .
Press review:
Decanter: “Vanessa Cherruau describes this wine as 'aristocratic' compared to her Anjou Blanc wines. Although the soil types are similar, Savennières has crumblier schist soils, which naturally produce wines in a more delicate style. This example has a soft, honeyed nose and gentle, delicate palate. Beautifully balanced, elegant and fine, it finishes with a combination of sweet fruit and a mouthwatering, salty note. Biodynamic.” 94 points
Vinous: ""The 2022 Savennières offers clarity and purity with a real chiseled precision. While athletic, concentrated and persistent, the elevage of 15 months in barrel (up from 12 months previously) has rounded its edges and given greater harmony, wrapping up its firm line. Lemon, lime, salt and spice linger on the linear finish." 92 points
