Seckinger 'Maikammer' Chardonnay, Pfalz, Germany 2025
“If this is the future of Pfalz, I'm in.” - JancisRobinson.com
We currently have four German Chardonnays on our list and that is us restraining ourselves. We have tasted so many great ones recently that if our heart ruled our head, we’d have at least another dozen. We couldn’t leave this beauty out and certainly not at the price. It has all the hallmarks of a really fine white Burgundy with crystalline, glacial fruit, hints of sparked gunpowder and an impression of broken limestone. Succulence comes in the shape of guava and star fruit, while citric acidity pulls the bow string back to create the tension. An absolute steal for £25.95! 13% alc. Drink now-2035
Press review:
The Wine Advocate: “Sourced from vines barely five years old, the 2025 Maikammer Chardonnay nevertheless already conveys the limestone- and clay-rich soils with notable clarity. The bouquet is still strongly marked by lees aging and shows a faint reductive edge, yet it remains clear, intense and elegant. Elegant, fresh and fruit-driven on the palate, it combines considerable charm with fine acidity and a wonderfully supple texture that almost recalls Riesling in its lightness of touch. Already highly enjoyable today, especially at the table, this Ortswein Chardonnay also appears capable of rewarding five to 10 years of further bottle age. Drink now-2039.” 92 points
JancisRobinson.com (previous vintage): “A cool, aromatic symphony of flint and smoke, tea leaves, cedar, buttered lemon toast, green herbal notes and crisp fruit. The first impression is energy, tension and a pulsating inner rhythm. A lithe bassline shapes the palate with oscillating levels of sound or, in this case, taste, dynamically playing off of each other in new and beautifully unexpected ways. Rising strains of acidity, tannin and minerality function beautifully alone, yet harmonise seamlessly when woven together. Unbelievably cool with high herbal tones and the silkiest of textures. Elegant and complex as it draws to a powerful close, leaving only the single, smoky opening note reverberating in the empty glass. Wine of structure, elegance and class with an understanding of how to harness the power of the sun without losing the cool climate of Germany. If this is the future of Pfalz, I'm in.” 18+ points
