Storm 'Vrede' Chardonnay, Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa 2020

£36.00

Be prepared to do a double-take and check the label after you have tasted this wine, because the flavours are so taut and flinty that you might expect to see the word “Puligny-Montrachet” emblazoned across the front, but it has the marginally less pronounceable “Hemel-en-Aarde”. This is a brilliant vintage of the ‘Vrede’ Chardonnay from Hannes Storm, a wine which, unlike us, can hold its own in the very loftiest company. It’s fine and focused with a silky texture and delicious lemon, lime and almond croissant flavours. 13% alc. Drink now-2030.

Press review:

Tim Atkin MW: “Hannes Storm's Vrede Chardonnay comes from a warm site at the bottom part of the vineyard on a north-facing slope. Fermented with 50% malolactic, it's a textured, structured Chardonnay with floral aromas, some passion fruit and citrus, a hint of marzipan and a surprisingly fresh, focused finish. 12.8% alc. 2022-2027.” 94 points

Jancis Robinson MW: “Very fresh, somehow limpid nose. Super-crisp and crystalline. I’d want to wait a little while before enjoying this, but I’m sure it will age well. Light green-fruit aromas. Made with a delicate touch. Drink now-2026.” 16.5+ points

Jamie Goode: “Lovely mineral edge to the rich pear and white peach fruit with a spicy, mealy, fine palate showing nice precision. Lovely weight here: very fine.” 94 points
