A great value Swartland Chenin Blanc, made by Banele Vakele, whose CV includes everything bar a moon landing (‘Next Generation Winemaker of the Year’, ‘Cape Winemaker’s Guild Protégé’, assistant winemaker to Duncan Savage, “A name to watch”, Tim Atkin MW). The beautiful label reflects Banele’s birthplace in the Rondavel Hills and there’s a soulfulness that comes through in the wine, a really honest, unadorned Chenin Blanc, packed with Canary melon, crabapple jelly and lemon curd, with surprising depth for a wine with only 12.5% alc. Drink now-2028.
