“There are probably three cult names taking Valpolicella itself seriously: Quintarelli, Dal Forno and Marion.” - Jancis Robinson MW

There were exactly 498 wines at the tasting where we discovered this wine and it was the wine we couldn’t stop thinking about on the way home. For us, that’s a surefire indicator that we’ve just fallen in love, much like when someone keeps dropping a person’s name into conversation and you just want to rap them on the forehead with your knuckles and say “Wake up stoopid, you’re in love!”.

The reason it initially made us go weak at the knees was the way its aromas seduced us so unexpectedly. The colour was no more than a pale, translucent ruby, suggesting something light, possibly even dilute, yet somehow, from its limpid depths emerged the most beautiful scents of cherry, tomato leaf, loose tea, terracotta, damson and turned soil. Inescapably Italian! The palate was so sinewy and contoured, it was like a mountain road winding through the Dolomites, with no sharp turns, just a long and mellifluous journey with spectacular views. I would drink this instead of an Amarone, because its lighter, yet all the flavours are still there to be enjoyed, and as such it’s amazing value! 14.5% alc. Drink now-2032.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson MW (previous vintage): “Transparent garnet. Intense, minerally, tense nose that manages to be savoury and interesting rather than sweet and heavy. Well done! I would happily drink this complex, mature wine with a steak. Neat and dry on the end. VGV.“ 17 points
