Adaras Aldea, Bodegas Almanseñas, Almansa, Spain 2021
There’s a rule that applies to wines with abstract labels, which states that the more inscrutable it is, the greater the winemaking sins it is covering up. It’s known as Orin Swift’s Law. As with all rules, however, there are exceptions and here’s a very fine one! The label gives little away, so allow me to speak on its behalf. It’s an organic blend of Garnacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet) and Syrah, aged for a brief spell in oak barrels and is full of joyful fruit, weighted like a Pinot Noir, but imbued with southern flavours of poached plum skins, cherry pie, bacon fat and tobacco leaf. Ok, ok, that sounds a bit weird, maybe I should have stuck to something more abstract. 13.5% alc. Organic. Drink now-2025.
